NOTES SUPPLIED BY THE THEATRES

By hiring "extras" who had actual- authentic ly worked in a bank, atmosphere was maintained in "Amer- ican Madness" the up-to the-minute Columbia film, hailed as the great American picture of to-day. The film features Walter Huston as Tom Dickson, a bank president who be lieves that money should be lent on character rather than fluctuating collateral, such as stocks and bonds; if the country is to pull out of de pression into prosperity. The pic: ture, which denis with a daring and sensational theme, will be at

the Queen's Theatre to-morrow. "About 160 fermer bank eniployees consisting of tellers, adding machine operators and financial secretaries who had seen netual service before retrenchment be- came necessary in various banking Institutions, word used. Columbia was able to aid then with a week's work while inside sequences ware be ing shot. Names of bank workers but of jobs were obtained through personnel directors. In all, about 100 "extras"

used. Frank Capra, director of "Américan Mad- ness", worked with a cast which in- cluded, besides Huston, Pat O'Brien, Kay Johnson, Constance Cummings, Gavin Gordon, Edwin Maxwell, Bur- ton Churchill, Robert Ellis, Anderson Lawler and Jeane Sorel, who makes her Columbia, debut in "American Madness".

"Street Scene"

It was merely an accident of birth; that made the great city of New York the locale of "Street Scene, which comes to the King's Theatre on Sunday. Had the author of this prize drama, Elmer Rice, been born and drawn his characters from the life of any other American city, large or small, his characters would have been the same flesh and blood. For "Street Scene" is the story of the conflict and emotions, the fleeting joys and longer heart aches of human charac- ters in an evironment which is the same in every city. "A cross-section of New York life" it was called when it was presented as a stage play. In bringing it to the larger panorama of the screen with King Vidor direct ing and Sylvia Sidney, William Col- lier, Jr., and Estelle Taylor in the leading roles, Samuel Goldwyn 'is presenting it as a cross-section the entire world.

**A Bill of Divorcement"

What becomes of the pathetic shell- shocked men who return to their homes from the war and attempt to pick up the threads of their lives? It is one of these shell-shocked sol diers who serves as the central char acter in the dramatic RKO-Radio Pie- ture, "A Bill of Divorcement", star- ring John Barrymore at the Central to-day. Barrymore plays the

the role of 44 broken wraith of a trics

himself poser who to adapt

to the changed conditions he finds in his home after long absence. The sacrifice of his daughter to insure his and his wife's ultimate happiness Billie Burice, Katharine Hepburn, David Manners, Paul Cavanagh, Henry Stephenson, Elizabeth Patterson and Gayle Evers comprise, the supporting cast which was directed with telling effect by George Cukor.
