FELT HATS
What they are made of and how to choose them
BY
LINCOLN BENNETT.
ITHOUT entering into too
W detailed and technical an
explanation of how Felt Hats are made, it is our endeavour to furnish A sufficiently complete description, both of the method of manufacture and of the materials used, to enable any man to decide what kind of felt hat will best- suit his requirements before he Days I
Felt hats (both Bowlers and Soft Felts), are made either af Wool Felt or Fur Felt.
A Wool Felt is at once detected; by its "lack of lustre" appearance and by its coarne "blankety" feql. Only when it is finished with a veneer of fur can a Wool Felt Hat hope to escape detection, and even then a close inspection will revea Its shoddincen.
Our present concern is with Fur Felt Fats-hats the folt of which is made entirely of fur.
How Felt is Mode.
Many people Imagine that the fur skin is used, that the felt for hats is made in stripa, or that the fur hairs are stuck together b some adhesive agent such as glue. None of these ideas is correct.
The fur is cut from the skin, laj cleansed of all grease, pleces o skin and foreign matter, and all thick coarse hairs are removeu The fur is then in a very finely separated form.
The required weight-enough. for one hat of this pure fur is then thrown or sprayed out of the funnel mouth of a machine over and around a large finely per forated copper cone to which u fur is attracted by the suction induced by an electric fan work!
ng below the cone.
This perforated cone, which is continuously revolving, is wet and the hairs of the fur adhere to it, evenly covering its entir surface. Water from a super. heated chamber la aprayed finely on to the cone, with the result that the individual hairs of fur come together, Interlock and In other hold on to each other. words, the fur has begun to "felt," and the covering on the cone has changed its nature. From a covering of loose for it has be
01 come a coating of thin felt Bullicient strength to allow of it being stripped off the cone, which it was formed, in one pieco,! Felling.

Here we have the body of a feli that in its first stage; but this fel. That body when removed from the cone is many times larger than any hat.
By subjection in various way to the combined conditione of heat, moisture and pressure with
the
I movement,
felt body contracted thickened,
arzu Loughened;
word+ other the “felting" in continued until the individual hairs have no come together and interlocked, that it is impossible for them to separate. Each hair is now more closely locked and interwined with its fellows than are the threads of any woven material, and the fol body, shrunk to the required aize, thickness and strength, is read to be stiffened and blocked into shape.
The Quality of the Fur.
The foregoing is broadly th method by which all Fur Felt Hats are made, and it will consequentḥ be readily understood that th quality of felt hat, by which we mean the standard of appearance; and durability, will depend almoại entirely upon the kind of fur used.
Generally speaking, the longes the Individual hairs of the fur the stronger and tougher will be the felt, and the finer the hairs, the eloner its texture.
If the hairs are short and coars they will be unable to hold to-| gether with the game tenacity na longer hairs; the felt will stretch and the hat quickly go out of shape, possibly also tear or broak. If, on the other hand, the haire are both long and fine. the close tough felt they make will produce in hat that will not stretch and will
therefore retain its shape.
