Taking Stock.

The matter of watching our In- venue has become, in the circums- tances of to-day, a more than usually like to important one, and I would refer to it rather more fully.

For years now the Tung Wah Hós- pital has been incurring large addi- tional capital expense in the cause of Hongkong charity at all its three large hospitals; but with the comple- tion of the Tung Wah Eastern Hos. pital, which we hope His Excellency the Governor will open to-morrow, the Committee can fairly say that they have reached a stage whero thoy! should pause and take stock of tholf resources.

Too Much Charity.

An obvious method, of course, is to concentrate for a time on our revenue and endowment. A good start has been made to-day, and I should like to see the rest of this sito covered with buildings that will help us out still farther.". But there is the more important and diffienit question of the old Tung Wah Hospital itself. Its life is nearly done, and reconstruction must very shortly be taken in hand; but the nature of the reconstruction is the problem. If you had twenty such free hospitals in the Colony you would no doubt be able to fill them all; but I would ask the Committee and the community to harden its charitable heart just a very little, and to ask whether wo are not being ex- ploited to some degroo. Are
