The last occasion upon which the main brace spliced throughout the Fleet was, as has been reported, on Armistice Day. 1918, when the order Kiven by the Commander-in-Chief. "Splicing the main brace" is not necessarily reserved for occasions the of celebration throughout Fleet. The term in applied to the Issue of an extra tot of rum at any time, although such times occur only in very special circum stances. To take an example, a certain destroyer captain during the war, after his ship had wal- lowed and plunged through storm from the Firth of Forth right up to the north of Scotland. through the Pentland Firth, and down the West Coast, gave the order to "Splice the Main Braco" in his ship when he reached

"Temperance" Men.
booka.
There are a number of facts about the Navy's rum issue which are perhaps not generally known. For example, to-day, in a battle ship, only about a third of the hands entitled to the rum issue take it, the others preferring the three-pence a day which is given to them in lieu of the rum issue. such men having the letter "F," meaning "Temperance," plice i be side their names in the ship's The "Temperance" men are not necessarily strict teetotallers on shore, though, by their refusal of the rum issue, they are necessarily teetotallers on board, hecause in II. M. ships there are only four "bars." The Captain, who messos alone, has one to himself. The wardroom officers (from Comman- der to Lieutenant) have one. The gun-room officers, including Sub- Lieutenants, Midshipmen, and Cadets, have one (although Mid- shipmen and Cadets are not allow- ed spirits, only beer and light wines being permitted to them). Finally, the Warrant officers have A tar.
All hands below the rank of Warrant Officer have to depend upon the daily rum ration for alcoholic refreshment on board ship. Chief Petty Omeera, and Petty Officers get their half-gill of rum neat, All other ratings→→ except those under a certain age, who get nothing-receive their ration in the form of grog-the. haif gill of rum diluted with one and a half gills of water. might be thought that this three- to-one mixture would effectively "drown the miller," but actually the quality of the rum issued to the Navy is high, and the grog, of which I have pleasant, memories in by no means an unwelcome drink for anyone who is not a temperance reformer. Origin of "Grog"
It
Grog is a very old mixture. It was first introduced by Admiral Vernon when he was Commander- jin-Chief in the West Indies in 1740, and ordered the rum to be watered. He Was nick-named "Old Grog" because of the cloak of a course material called gro- gram which he wore, and the beverage he introduced was named after him.
Finally concerning the run isque it may be noted that at the time when Admiral Vernon deeid- ed to water it, the ration to ench man was a half plat of next rum. It can be, acen. therefore, that from that half pint (to which Admiral Vernon added a quart of water, directing that the inixture should be issued in two lotu, mor- ning and afternoon) to the pre- sent half gill, with or without water, the sailor has advanced far on the road to abstinence.
