CONTRACT BRIDGE

E. McKenney

By W. E

A great many players find 1 difficult to recognize a saunezr play and undoubtedly the mos difficult of all squeeze plays t recognize is the one known as th Vienna coup.

I claan the following as the best played band of the Conneau' Lake, Pa.. tournament. It involves an interesting Vienna coup play and was played by O. E. Emrich, a member of the Western Reserve ccam of Cleveland which won the contract tennt-of-four champion- ship. In addition, Mr. Emrich ha the high cumulative percentage for the tournament. While Mr Emrich's bidding at times may be elassed as bold, he is one of the best card players in the country,

Mr. Emrich sat in the South and opened the contracting with one club. West passed and North bid one diamond. Mr. Emrich's nex declaration was three no trump.

The Play,

West's opening lead was the eight of spades which Enst won with the ace. East returned the ten of spades which Mr. Emrich refused to cover. The Rix was continued which West won with the queen. Mr. Emrich discarding a club from dummy.

The king of spades was cashed by West and another club dis- carded from dummy, Mr. Emrich dropping & heart.

East and West had taken the first four tricks, and West was in the lend. It looked as though he were bound to make either the king of hearts or the king of clubs.

However, he realized that if he were to lead away from either king, the declarer might make his contract. Therefore West select- ed the lead of the eight of dia- monds which Mr. Emrich, in the South, won with the jack.

After West's play of the eight of diamonds. Mr. Emrich marked him for both missing kings. He decided not to try what might prove to ho a losing finesse, but selected the play known as the Vien con and now played his ace of hearta, deliberately setting o West's kine. He then played the moon of diamonds. West dis- carded the seven of hearts, and tha weeg was overtaken by dummy's Mr. Mr. Emrich then led four straight diamonds from dummy. It was immaterial what East play- od. 3. Emrich discarded his three eluhe, Sark of haunts and This left him holding the nee and atteen of clubs, while dummy hold the moon of hearts and the sight of clube, 1st was able to, dis- mard the ning of bogris and the four noul Juna of clubu, but on the fourth 'd'amond he was squeezer.

· He held the king of hearts and The Hum and gavan of clubs, ko dronned the king of hearts, durgamaa niteply was frond, un be plusad tha ganan në alube and now all that Mr. Emrich had to do was to logrin pluh from dummy an un with the non and panturo Wast°f king sind the last trick was won in his own hand with the queen of clubs to make his contract.

EXPERIENCE

IS A GREAT TEACHER.

Especially in bringing up children.

Mothers and fathers too will no doubt recall the dißculties they hnd with their first child. There is so much to learn about the best way of keeping the child healthy and happy. Failing actual ex- perlence of your own the next best guide is the experience of others. One of the most diMcult times is the teething period.

At this trying time there is no friend like Baby's Own Tablets. the remedy specially designed to meet the health-needs of babies the and young children. Read following letter from

a grateful parent.

"Experience is a great teacher" writes Mrs. (Rev.) M. E. Conron. of 187, Marlboro St, Brantford. Canada. "When our Arst baby arrived I knew nothing about Baby's Own Tablets. When baby began to eut his teeth he WAN cross and feverish and would not take his food. We lost much sleep and I began to get quite exhausted. One day when my husband, who in a clergyman, was out visiting, o lady advised us to try Baby's Own Tablets. We certainly found they worked wonders. In twenty-four hours we had a different baby. Now we have a family of six little ones with whom we have used no other medicine but Baby's Own Tablets. They are splendid for the children and babies, prevent- ing colds from developing beyond

And the early stages.

because they are pleasant co trke we have no trouble in naministering them nor are there any griping effects. We certainly recommend them to all parents. Once used no would be without them."

Z. Perpetual Forests, Ltd. urges investors not to lose alght of the elements of investment-security of principal and certainty of yield. It stresses the fact that the price of a security must depend upon the conditions Inside the issuing company and the trade and the conditions outside them. There is nothing else for it to depend upon.

Because of this, N, Z. Perpetual Forests, Ltd. advises investors to place their money in a "Growing Industry." In an industry with a constructive plan already in action to meet a definite public need.

The £30 bonds of this Company-payable by instalments-issued to effect on affore- station programme of vital importance to International trade amply secured-and with a conservatively estimated yield of £250 in approximately twelve years-are long-term investments of solid worth.
