The artificial Two-Club Bid is used only as an original bid. It can be minde by dealer, by second hand after dealer has passed, by third hand after two passes, or by fourth hand after three passes; it has the same meaning in all

cases.

The Two-Club Bid is made: (a) When the bidder has two long, strong suits and wants his partner to express a preference.

(b) When the bidder na strong No-Trump hand, with one suit either unstopped or insecure- iy stopped: and desires to find out whether his partner has that suit protected. and whether the part- ner prefers No Trump or the bid- der's best suit.

(e) When the bidder holde ten tricks in a Major Suit or eleven in a Minor and wants to find out whether the partner has an Ace and a King, because in that event The desires to make a alam bid.

We will now set out, in detail. the precise requirements for cases (a) and (b). The requirements for (e), a situation that rarely beeurs, were set forth in stating the character of the bid,

The strength requirements for The Two-Club bid are that its maker have eight playing tricks with either suit, when he is giv- ing his partner the choire of two suits, or eight tricks with the suit and a No-Trump count of at least 21, when he is asking his partner to select between sult and a No-Trump.

Should adversary to the left interpose a bid after an artificial Two-Club Bid, the partner of the Two-Club bidder may pass (the hidding has been kept open) may make any normal bid that this hand contains. If he or the Two-Club bidder should double, it is for business-as the Two- Club Bid has announced xreal strength and a business double may be most profitable. How- ever, knowing that he is opposed by greal strength, an adversary rarely will put his head in the noose by bidding.

When a Two-Club Bid made by South is passed by West, North must

North answer. Indeed, must keep the bidding open for South until a Game Bid is reached., North's Grst answer is quite sim- ple; Two No Trumps, if he has in his hand an Ace and a King or two Aces unless he has a five-card Major suit headed by one or both. of these honours or * four-card

Assuming the Two-Club bidder

The partner would keep the bidding open by, enlling two No Trumps and after that the Two-Club bidder would bid three Hearts, in this way giv ing his partner a choice, between two suits.

When the choice to be given is between No Trumps and a suit, and the answer of the partner is two Diamonds, South calls two No Trumps and then North, by bid- ding three Sparles, Hearts or Diamonds shows that he has such suit thoroughly stopped. Lack- ing such strength he would bid three Clubs and then South would bid three of his suit, giving North the choice between that and the. No Trump. If North shows stoppers for a suit and that plugs the weakness in the South hand, South on the third round bids three No Trumps.

When using the Two-Club Arti- ficial Bid, the three Game-Demand Bid is not used and the upper- tunity is afforded to make an original suit bid of three to indi- cate a band not adapted to the Two-Club Bid. but one that can (Continued on Page 11.)
