The contract was South one heart, West two clubs, North avo no trun, East pased South bld three hearts, West passed and North invited the alum by going five hearts, but South pasted.

The Play

West lind the opening lead. He did not like to open away from hiæ ace-queen of clubs, but pre- ferred the

queen of diamonds opening, which dumny won with the are. The dener of hearts was! Jed from dummy. The declarer wim with the ner, catching West's queen. The declarer immediate- ly led his six of clubs as West was; marked with the nee. West went up with the ace of clubs and re- turned the Jack of diamonds which the dummy won with thei king.

declarer Declarer's

The declarer they had a losing i diamond and a losing spade, the other of which could be thrown on the king of clubs, so the de- clarer's next play was the king of clubs from dummy. East follow- ed with the four and here the de- Celarer made a very shrewd dis- eard. Instead of dropping his six of diamonds, he discarded the five of spades. A small spade was then led from dummy, winning with the age. next play was the six of spades which was won in dummy with the king. Then in hopes of finding the spades evenly distributed, the declarer led a small spade from dummy. When Enst played the jack, the declarer tromped with the four of hearts and then led his king of hearts. The six of hearts was led to dummy's jack, which picked up the outstanding trump. You will notice that the seven of spades in dummy is good and the declarer led it, discarding his losing diamond.

He then won the last two tricks with his two trump.

The declarer had nothing to lose in dropping a spade instead of a diamond. If the spades would break three-bree, he could see an extra trick.

PRESSMEN BLAMED FOR MISCONSTRUCTION

Paris, July 18. All the exeltement aroused by Paris and London differently con- struing the agreement entered into between England and France at Lausanne, was due to "vexatious interpretations" by pressmen, ac- cording to M. Herriot, who denies that any implication limiting Eng- land's liberty of action as regards the United States, "over came out i of his mouth."

M. Herriot endorses Sir John Simon's views as to the Lausanne undertaking, which was made for the sake of the peace of Europe and was directed against nobody.
