UR new "Ringlette" method of permanent waving is | revolutionary, it is quite as simple, easy and comfort-

discomfort, pull orpoin. There is no pedestal-no chandelier- no heavy mass of metal to take away the pleasure of having a beautiful wave,

Too-just one wire is used-that assures you of freedom of movement throughout the operation-YOU CAN WRITE, WALK, OR TELEPHONEI It produces a beautiful, natural wave-and that with one-tenth of the usual amount of heat. This naturally tends to protect the hair rather than take the life out of It The "Ringlette" marka a new freedom and new beauty in permanenta-be among the first to enjoy it's comfort.

SIMPLIFIED CHINESE

'SCRIPT.

The closure of the Commercial Pross book stores in Shanghai

following the destruction of its building and plant in North Honan Road, will be a blow to education- al institutions throughout China. The Commercial Press wax atart- ed about 30 years ago by a North- China Daily News compositor, a Siangsu man, who, jeining up with a fellow worker, operied a little printing office in Peking Head with one machine and a few ennes of type. A fire burnt the ofice out soon afterwards, but insur- ance enabled the founder to carry on in a more convenient oflice near by. Not many years later. fre again cinimicil the Commercial Press as its victim; but again the optimistic How measured his de- stiny, with fate and the insurance companies and founded a larger printing office in Haining Eond,

The demand of more and mort Chinese printing went on apacę. and assistance was obtained from Jupancye sources tu instal, on credit, more extensive and modern machinery; a credit which Wha later liquidated in cash.

In 1914, Mr. Z. F. How, a sisat and genial character well known | both to foreigners and Chinese n Shanghai, came under the notice of the Kidnappers' Guild and re- colved a letter requesting a tonn, a large loan for purely charitable ригрозен. It was not fortheum- ing. A few days or weeks later the spring of 1914, Mr. How was shot and killed In Honan Road, in front of the store any being closed,

The 'noshan Rond Plant.

The business was carried on and eventually grew to its recent dimensions in Paoshan Rond. it specialised in, all kinds of ednea- |tional printing, and equipment for the Chinese, and could produce with equal facility a five cent kindergarten primer er a million dollara in bank notes, Its staff numbered more than 3,000, about In thousand of whom were women and girls employed in bookbinding and lighter tasks. Its library is known by repute to probably every literate Chinese in the world; its loss is irreplaceable. But a great- er Intrinsic loss is that of the Lens of thousands of dies, moulds, and type characters destroyed by the fire. Will they be replaced; or will the opportunity be taken (to develop some form of simplified Chinese script or character? Pundits have laid the blame for China's decline through the cen- turies partly on the inflexibility of a frozen language, which makes the interpretation of technical de- tail and ever-changing thought an impossibility. Japan has solved the problem in her OWN Way WI China by behind?

But tearning, to the Chinese, is the brightest jewel in the crown. of human attainment. The catas trophe of the Commercial Press, an echo of the Emperor Ching's burning of the hooks, will spur this unconquerable people on, till. in but a few years, yet another Commercial Press will arise-to outrival, perhaps, its famous pre- decessor. Ita guerdon and crest should be the phoenix.
