It is believed that the Tartu,; the new French cestroyer which

The ship is one of twelve vessels begun In 1928 and now complet- Ing. Though rated
as torpedo- boat-destroyers, these ships are in reality small cruisers, or destroyer- cruisers, and when completed will form

and six 21.7 torpedo tubes, in two triple mountings. With the enormous horse-power of 70,000, she is expected to nehieve 38 knots on trial, and at 18 knots she will have a radius of action of 2,500 to 3,000 miles.
The armament of these ships, it will be seen, in very powerful for vessels of such a tonnage, and the comparatively small radius of ne tion nt economical apeed indi- cates that they are intendent for comparatively local work, as they have inaufbeient radius for pro- tracted ocean cruises.
in
The speed of these veancis less note-worthy than their arma. ment, being, indeed, little, if t all, in excess of British destroyers under Service conditions, H.M.S. Codrington having maintained 38 knots for four hours on trial.
Trial speeds are generally carri ed out on a light draught, which gives an incorrect iden of the speeds obtained at full draught.
A British Comparison. It is of interest to note that the British destroyer Tartar built by Menars. Thornycroft R quarter of a century ago, attained corded trial speed of 35.7 knota, MAN AND WOMAN IN which speed, was in reality con-
