CINEMA SCREENINGS.

NOTES SUPPLIED BY THE THEATRES.

Great difculties in photographing' and recording serneg of the majestic outdoors of the Hudson Bay country were encountered by the Warner Bros. company, under the direction of | George Fitzmaurice, during the Glm- ing of the Vitaphone production, "Tiger Roso," which comes to the Queen's Theatre to-day, co-starring Monte Blue and Lupo Velez.

Much of the picture WAS taken ulong rushing streams and on lakes. Frequently, In order to catch the canoe and boat scenes, company carpenters would have to build plat forms out into the torrents on which to place the cameras and recordinë, equipment. One of the most vivid” scenes of the pictura is that in which Lupo, Blue and Grant Withers start down river in a frail boat, and ride the rapids. Parts of those scenes were taken at Lake Arrowhead, and the rest in the rushing ranids of the American River, in the high Sierras. "Tiger Rose," adapted from Wiliard Mack's stage play. is marked by its pictorial beauty,

"The Ghost Train."

Nowadays the test applied to a new play is a comparatively simple one: "Will it make a good tölkte 1" Soma Years ago a stage play drew all London to the Garrick Theatre, and none was able to apply to-day's test. "The Ghost Train" drew its thousands for months, because of its eerie story and the noiren "off"

It was considered ilim Bubjccl from the evening of the try-out, bat Ilme elapsed before W, and F. secured the rights at produced a silent version of the thriller which swept the country.

With the coming of the talkle t WAR inevitable that ***The Choat Train," coming to the Queen's Theatre on Sunday, should be given a Поту lease of life. It is an ideal subject for the sound technician, and The making of the nety picture หล entrusted to Gainsborough Pictures. The noinen "off", sơ skillfully and laboriously concocted for the silent version, are in the new pictare part and parcel of the action.

All the excellent resources of the Gainsborough Studios and its able technical staffs were directed to the making of a film which is essentially n thriller, and we claim that the result in the nest railway dramn ever produced,

"Africa Speaka,”

Many African tribes-particularly those of the French Congo-have long made it a practice to mutilate the faces of their women. The fact has been observed and deplored not only by travellers, but by French govern- ment officials. All efforts to discover the origin of the custom failed, how- ever, until Paul L. Heefler, who re- cently made an amazing trip in the interests of the Colorado-African Ex- pedilian, unearthed he secret.

When Horffer reached the village of Kiya Re in the French Congo, which tinhabited by 'the Ubangis tribe, be was shocked, as others had been, to me that the faces of the native wo- men were disgured. They all wore huge wooden discs inserted in their lower Hps, which gave them the ap pearance of grotesque ducks,

Upon inquiry Hoefler learned that the custom originated in the days of the slave traffi Arab bands, who swept out of the desert on their quest for binek ivory and comely female natives, never failed to call upon the Ubangis, for the women of the tribe were noted for their beauty. The marauders were no greedy that they anap exhausted the supply of young girls. They then made a nractice of reizing female infants, These were reared by Arab 11. 1 until old enough to all in the slave market. Many Ubang men, who fought valf- antly to defend their women, were killed in Diese raids. The result was that the tribe was almost wiped out How long this reign of terror con- tinued it is impossible to say, but eventually the tribe built a central fort, around which the many scattered villages were collected, When the marauders erme out of the sands, the people would retire to the Fort and from a protecting walls were able to withstand all assaults. But further 'ta diaconrams the waye hunters they commenced the practice of disfiguring the faces of their women.

Authentic photographs of these chuck-billed women ате shown in Sneaks." the Benantion) African adventure ni^ture, which is now at the Central Theatre, together with many other intimate glimpses of pative life. The Alm. released throughout the world by Columbia Pictures, ahminds as well in splendid senic effects, and amazingly, elega shots of the wild beasts of the Jungle, Authorities and informed lasmen who have seen the picture ara unani. mous in unstinted praise of the thril ling scenes and realistic photography. Needless to state, the sounds of the Jongle, brought to the serven for the Art time, play a large part in ena- trtine to the unparalleled effect of the film.
