JURY ALTER THEIR VERDICT.

ENQUIRY INTO DEATH OF A PRISONER.

A verdict of "manslaughter against a person unknown" brought in yesterday afternoon by: the jury empanelled in the In- quiry, condueled by Mr. Fraser,. into the circumstances of the death of Chung Tang, a prisoner in Lalchikok Gaol, on December 12, but after being addressed by the Coroner, the jury altered it to "accidental death."

Yesterday's hearing was con- ducted at the Lalchikok Gnol, several prisoners being examined in the course of the proceedings. The Jury constated of Messrs. A. Mann (foreman), E. a. Rome- dios and Lo' Wang-choung.

Altered Verdict.

After a few minutes' considera- tion, the jury returned a verdict of "manslaughter against a person Buy

unknown."

The Coroner. On the evidence, there are only three possible ver dieta-manslaughter, accidental death or an open verdict. I munt say that on the evidence given you cannot bring in a verdict of

manslaughter. There is only one man against whom you could bring in a charge of manslaughter and that is the man who is alleged to have struck the deceased. You have the evidence of a prisoner; who alleges that he saw Prisoner 13777 striking the deceased, and big later says the himself WIN struck by this prisoner.

The Coroner went on to say that this rather took some value from this witness'a evidence, beende obviously he had a grudge against Prisoner 11777.

There was only this man's evi- dence to support A charge of manslaughter, said the Coroner. and he did not think that a man could be convicted of manus- laughter on this evidence alone.

“You are the judge of the facts and I am the judge of law," con- cluded the Coroner. "but I do not think you can, bring in a verdict. of manslaughter in this case,"

The jury then returned a ver diet of "accidentul death."
