WATCH THE CLUTCH

Useful Hints.

[By Israel Klein.]"

Perhaps the most important part concerned in the proper operation of the automobile is the clutch.

Many drivers have the habit of keeping their feet on the clutch pedal even while the engine is in high and thus unconsciously slip- ping the, clutch out of its position whenever the car hits a bump.

One of the first things to leira, therefore, is to keep the foot bif the clutch pedal, except when actually starting, stopping or changing gear.

+

Of course it is unnecessary to warn the driver against letting In the clutch too quickly. Yet, so regular and ordinary a thin has our driving become that many of us fall to notier this fundamental -- fault.

The clutching operation should be steady and slow, althouvh not too slow especially in second and high gear, or the difference between the speed of the motor and the slowing rate of the ear will become so great as to catie a slight retard- ing jolt when the clutch does. nt. into the driving plate.

While the car, is moving along, the clutch should not be disen- gaged any longer than is essential It should be kept in and the motor employed as brake, while the Cur is being slowed down, until the japeed of the car is too slow to keep. the motor anning. Then the élutch may be thrown out quickly and positively,

While the clutch is out, put the ears in neutral and take your foot the clutch pedal. Just before you are ready to start, depress the Clutch pedal, get into low gear and start as usual. This will save a great deal of strain on the clutch, and will keep the clutch plates in
