INDUSTRY.

GOVERNMENT TRIES TO PATCH UP DISPUTE.

London, July 8.

The Government has decided logislatively to intorvene In the dispute between the coalowners and minors over-working hours and wagon rates, which has threatened to load to a sorlous Industrial crisis.

The prosent Act, lapaing on July 8 provides for a soven and a half hour day, The negotiations of the two parties, in which the Govern- ment has taken a hand, have prov- ed abortive.

Now the conlowners have sent a letter to the miners declaring their Intention to oppose in every way possible the Government's Bill,

In intervening so as to try to make the parties reach an agree- ment, the Government's main ob- ject is to continue the seven and a half hour day for twelve months or until the operation of the gen- eral convention, which describes seven and a quarter hour day, whichever is shorter. The Gov- ornment desires to complete all the Dle parliamentary stages by Tuesday.

The miners have recommended the examination of the Bill to the delegate conference which is now sitting in London-Reuter and Bri- Hak Wircleas.

OBITUARY.

LINK WITH VICTORIAN STATESMANSHIP.

London, July 3.

The death has occurred of Str William Hart Dyke, who was Dis- rnolf's chief whip, and a promin- ent sportsman, being one of tha originatora of lawn tennis an play- ed to-day.

Sir William, veteran Conserva- live statesman, was born in Kent in August, 1837, na the son of the 6th Baronet, and was educated at. Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. He entered the House of Commons as M.P. for West Kent as long ago as 1865, and after a second term as its member from 1868 to 1885 sat for the Dartford Division, From 1868 to 1874 he was a Whip. and from 1874 to 1880 Chief Whip (Patronage Secretary to the Trea- Bury) in the Disraeli Government. He was Chief Secretary for froland in the short-lived Salls- bury Cabinet of 1886-6. Then from 1887 to 1892 he was Vice- President of the Council, that is, Minister of Education. Although he had no special qualifications. for the post, his innate sagacity overcame his inexperience and ho showed judgment in accepting all the best suggestions made to him by the permanent officials. He thus aucceeded in producing the best educational " "Čokie" Issued,
