Hundreds of police with linked hands to keep back enormous crowds, and R special squad of fifty picked detectives, selected for their intimate knowledge of anar- chists, were the features of the scene at Victoria Stu tion on the arrivat of King Alfonso to-day, owing to threats upon his life.

Alfonso has issued, through a trusted friend. in Paris, a vigorous statement. calling for an end to any conspiracies contemplated for his restoration.

"I hope I shall not go back to Spain, because my not going. back will mean the prosperity of my country," declared Alfonso in his most significant statement,

which was issued through the Duke of Alba, one of the King's most trusted counsellors.
