WORK OF THE BIBLE SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING OF THE

H.K. AUXILIARY.

The annual meeting of the Hongkong Auxiliary of the British and Foreign Bible Society WAB held at the Helena May Institute yesterday afternoon, with the Right Reverend C. R, Duppuy, Blahop of Victoria, in the chair. Quito ʼn large gathering attended the meeting, prior to which tea was served.

Supporting the Bishop were Dr. J. H. Montgomery, the Ilon Treasurer, Rev. Frank Short, the Hon. Secretury, the Right Reverend John Gowdy of Foochow, and the Rov. II. O. T. Burkwall, the Pro- vinelal Secretary, who has return- ed from furlough.

The annual report, which was presented to the meeting, stated in part:

The committee had considerable misgivings about the finances of the Auxiliary for 1930, and it was feared that the steady decline in subscrip- tions which began in 1928 would be continued this year. Thanks how. ever to the energy of the lady collec- torn, at the last moment our fears were dispelled, the decline was arrest ed and this year we were able to send to the Bible Society a sum of $1.450. This is an increase of $100 over the

amount rent last year. The Treasurer states that to secure more funds only a little more organization is neces anry, as the collectors report a willing response to the appen to aid the Bible Society.

This fnet in specially commended to the various Churches, as with their help and better organization the Committee is convinced that 1031 can be made the beat year that the Auxilary has aver known. it is desired to put on record the sincere thanks of the Auxiliary to all who contributed, and especially the Iaily rollectors for their efforts €171 behalf of the Society. A full list of donors and collectors together with a statement of accounts will be found At the end of this report.

Hainan, however, has hat from time to time its waves of unrest. Only during recent months have the mis- sionaries after years of evacuation or absence been able to reopen Kachek. During the year a Communiatle Band has held its own among the mountains, darting out na ocension offered when the Government soldiers ployed elsewhere, la loot and terrorize the people, and as quickly to retreat to their fastnesses, Fortunately for the island this band bas tacked skilled leadership. Colportage work has been adversely affected by this unrest and fear of attack. Under such can- diflans it is difficult for strangers to move about among the villages.

The peninsula of Lluchow, across the straits-from Hainan has for some years, enjoyed the reputation of being completely disturbed. Robber bands seemed to have their own way from the beginning to the end of the year. Church work and colportage had to be discontinued. The tide has turned, Tho peninsula is quiet and Church work can be resumed. The Hongkong committee has arranged for colportage efforts to be directed from Hainan.

The World Work.

The Auxiliary's interest is not simply in the local activities of the British and Foreign Bible Society but in its world work. The annual report "In the Mother Tongue" is on sale at the Depot, and will be found full of interest. It is intensely satisfying as a literary production; it is still more satisfying an record of # Society which has done and continues to do so much for the extension of God's Kingdom amongst the nations
