Concrete v Asphalt

In view of the fact that concrete roads are being laid in Kowloon, Mr. we reprodure an article by Francis Woud, M. Inst. C. E. which recently appeared in the technical Journal of the Manchester

Gray dis. It is of special interest to Hongkong, for not only do we take pride in our roads, but it is ob viously of great importance that we do not commit ourselves to a cost- programme of road building on lines which have proved a failure Josewhere. It is generally under- stood that the cost of a reinforced emmerete road in exceedingly high, and it does appear doubtful, after pernsing Mr. Wood's article, whe- ther concrete highways will give anything like the service of asphnit ronds. Another point is that even concrete roads are invariably carpeted with asphalt! We do Brge therefore, that all possible data should ho collected before the concrete road Is definitely adopted in Hongkong, for it must be remembered that the Colony has ample supplies of excellent granite for foundations. | and judging from some of our

rlier asphalt roads, there vincing evidence that, when laid properly, asphalt will stand up to both local cluate and traffic con-

litions.

Since July, 1930, a most interest- ing experiment has been conducted throughout Finland, a police. gulation deereeing that motorista must not use horns and similar noisy instruments for warning pedestrians and other ears. At the end of eight months, it has been discovered that accidents have do creased by as much na 24%! The result is indeed impressive, and gives rise to the hope that a new ern will dawn when the cities of the world will not be made, hide- ous by the incessant tooting and screeching of motor horns.
