CINEMA NOTES.
"MONTANA MOON" CHARMING ROMANCE OF WEST.
What are probably the most beauti- ful exterior scenes ever photographed for a motion picture may be seen at the Queen's Theatre to-day "Montana Moon," Metro-Goldwyn Western starring
musical Maper's Joan Crawford.
in
Malcolm St. Clair who directed the took advantage of the production
locale of the story, Montana castle ranch, to include scenes of the cow- boys munding up steers, roping un-
cattle, ruly horses and
riding up mountain trails, looking over wide
and other! plains from precipices
nature which are as phenomena of spectacular as they are beautiful. The work of the cameramen in getting: these scenes from the most unusual. viewpoints
is remarkable. When
remembered that the settings serve only as the background in engrossing romance presenting the problem of class distinction it will be easily seen that the production ranks as one of the best of the cur-
rent season.
The plot centres about 'Miss Craw- ford, as the daughter of a wealthy West ranch owner who had come with a party of friends to get a hyno- change from the formal and critical conventions of
of sophisticated New York. When her sister's fiance her ол makes love to
the train, she junips off it, while it stops at a water and wanders about the country disgusted with her
own sot. When she meets John Mack Brown, a cow- boy, his sincere and rugged character is like a fresh draught to her after the insincere mannerisms of her own society and she permits herself to be- come involved in an impotuous mar- ringe.
However, the contrast between the simple cowpuncher and
her society friends is glaringly shown when she introduces him to her family and friends and he in turn has nothing but contempt for her idle associates sa that despite their love for one an- other the romance is brought to an impasse.. When Miss Crawford finally decides to leave
her cowboy husband and return to New York with her friends, John Mack Brown reveals a strength of character than was red of him and taking matters into his own hands gets his wife back by means of a strategy which comes as a surprising elimax.
Original twiste in Van Dine Talkie.
Philo Vance, well-known literary ameter to the many mystery story enthusiasts who have made a habit of reading S.S. Van Dine's exciting tales, will make his appearance on the screen to-morrow when "The Bishop Murder Case" comes to the Queen's Theatre for three days.
That the public will welcome this latest cinema hair-raiser may be as. sure from the enthusiastic reception given its predecessors
es Unholy Night" and "The Thirteenth Chair" It is said that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer while making an inventory of contemporary mystery-story writers with the inten tion of satisfying popular demand for bigger and better thrillers, came upon the fact that Van Dine's works have sold over two million copies which more or less won the day for this author. It is said there good reason for this leadership of Van Dines in the
