DOOMED.
BRITISH CONSUL'S STATE- MENT AT SHANGHAL
Shanghai, Nov. 3.
The fate of greyhound racing" in Shanghai has been definitely sealed, as the result of a statement · mado this morning by. Mr. J. F. Brenan, H.M. Contul Géneral, after a long conference at the Consulate General with the Director General of the Municipal Council and the Commis sioner of Police.
two
Mr. Brenan said that the officials and himself were not concern- ed with the limitation of gambling of which greyhound racing was the foundation, but with its complete elimination, and that every effort 3 would be made to have its early bau-
ning effected.
In view of the fact that the Muni- eipal Council must follow such a decl 1sion by the
representative of the Crown, Immedinte police action is ex-i pected. A special Council meeting will decide what course to “adopt.
Mr. Brenan said.-"Two greyhound
courses in the Settlement are British owned, but when they were started the British authorities had no idea of the tremendous amount of gambling The the sport would involve."
Director General subsequently said 3greyhound racing was selected as the
more in
the campaign against gambling here, as was intended, no
hardship would evolve on greyhound racing companies, who would be given ample time to liquidate.--Our Own Correspondent.
