OBITUARY.
· WELL-KNOWN ENGINEER FOUND DEAD.
Cairo, Sept. 27.
Sir John Norton Griffiths, the eminent engineer, was found dead in his hotel at Alexandrin this
morning.
His Company recently stopped the work of heightening the Assuan Dem, owing to alleged Incompetent interference with the resident engineer's staff by the Egyptian Government.
Later.
Sir John Norton Griffiths was found not at his hotel but in a surf boat in which he had paddled out alone from the beach at San Stefano, Alexandria. It was noticed that the boat seemed empty and another boat went out to investigate. Sir John was found dead with a bullet wound in his temple.
When the Grimths frm stopped work on the dam, the Egyptian Government issued a communique stating that Sir John had written to the Government asking for financial assistance.-Reuter,
Sir John Norton Griffiths has been famous all over the world as representative of an engineering firm and an engineering family. Born He was the first Baranet.
of the late John in 1871, Grifiths, he served in the South African war and at the age of 25 was in command of scouts in the Mutabele affair. He then joined Brabants 2nd Division and after- wards was Captain and Adjutant of Lord Roberts's, Bodyguard, on the Headquarters Staff in the war with the Roers, lie was mention- ed in despatches three times and

until the Labour success of 1921. In the Great War, Capt. Griffiths served with distinction and became Lieut. Colonel. He was authorised in 1914 to raise the 2nd King Edward's Horse. Later he was attached to the Staff of the Engineer in Chief, G.H.Q... to organise and initiate tunnelling companies of the Royal Engineers. He was mentioned in despatches three times, and, in addition to his promotion, received the D.S.O. In 1916 he was sent on a special mission, as General Staff Officer, First Grade, in connexion with corn and oil stores in Rumanis, For his work then he was made Commander of the Grand Star of Roumania, an officer of the Legion of Honour and a member of the Russian Order of St. Vladimir. In the following year he was knighted K.C.B.
