THE LOK MA CHAU TRAGEDY.

(Continued from Page 2)

The Coroner: But you did not know at the time that Mrs. Madg- wick and B543 wore dead.

Mr. Wolfe: It seemed there was so little to gain and so much to love. My thought was that we had got B543 into the cage,' and having got him into that cage, that Wo could reasonably deliberate before risking further lives to get- right into the station.

The Coroner: When did you' yourself receive news of this af- fair? I was in Kowloon at 6.15. p.m, and nothing had been heard of it at Shamshaipo station at that time. I returned to the Peak and heard the news there about 7.45) p.m. I returned and instituted a European emergency unit, ordered them to obtain arms, bullet proof waistcoats and guns. We caught the 9.5. p.m. ferry and arrived at Lok Ma Chau 'about_10.30 p.m.

I first received information that someone, presumably B543, was hiding in the native latrine, but apon search found this not to be, so, and I decided to make an at- tack on the station. We made this about 11.30 p.m.

If the D.S.P. hid entered the station before I got there and had suffered casualties, even if he had actually got in, I should have been, to say the least, dissatisfied.

The Coroner pointed out that at that time they did not know whether either Mrs. Madgwick or B543 were dead.

Mr. Wolfe replied that they also did not know if B543 was waiting for anybody with a rifle or possibly a Lewis gun.

Constable's Misconduct,

The Indian constable B543 Arst came under his personal notice from a report taken by the 1st A.S.P. on May 9th, when B543 and B80 were reported for misconduct and gambling in the barracks. He (witness) went into the case and decided to fine, both men $2 and cautioned them with dismissal. He also ordered the confiscation of the $79 gambling money discovered in B80's possession. In all of his connexions with the Police Force since 1903 he had never heard of gambling amongst the constables on such a scale as this. The sum of $650 was involved, B543 having lost $260. He won back $100 the same night, and as B80 would not pay, he came down to the charge room and reported him.

The action of Mr. Scott in re- transferring the men to different stations in the New Territory was. entirely in accordance with the cus- tom, as it was оде method of separating the gamblers.
