A NEW PEKING GOVERNMENT.

YEN HSI-SHAN AS THE

PRESIDENT.

Peking, Sept. 9. Marshal Yen Hsi-shan, Mr. Wang Ching-wei and Mr., Hsich Chi took the oath this morning as President and members of the State Council respectively. They are the only three elected members of the State Council at Peking. Mr. Wang Fah-chin, the eldest member of the Kuomintang Con- ference, administered the oath, the ceremony of which was a very simple one.

This morning's ceremony began with the National Anthem and bowing before the portrait of Sun Yat-sen and the reading of his will.

After Yen Hsi-shan and the others had taken the oath, Wang- Fa-chin read an admonition saying that it was an important day in the history of China. It meant opposition to Chiang Kai-shek and his dictatorship and materialisa- tion of democratic principles. The country must be freed from corruption and placed on a sound economic basis.

Yen Hai-shan and the others, replying, declared that their gene- ral programme would be tran- quillity for the people, abolition of corruption, clean politics, limita- tion, of taxation, and the issue of budgets and public statements of

accounts,

After the ceremony, Yen Hsi- shan and his colleagues issued a circular telegram announcing

their assumption of office, dated September 9, in the nineteenth

year of the Republic.-Reuter.

RICHSHA COOLIE SERIOUSLY INJURED.

A quarrel which is said to have) originated over a dispute for the possession of ten cents, between a ricksha puller and a street) coolie, yesterday afternoon, de- veloped into a stabbing affair in which the ricksha puller was seriously wounded in two places, necessitating his admittance into the Government Civil Hos- pital.

It appears that about 1.45 p.m. a Chinese merchant, recently re- turned from the United States. was at the Ping On Wharf, Con- naught Road West, asking the way! to the Tung Wah Hospital. A street coolie, it is stated, ap- proached him, and asked for a re- muneration of fifty cents to act as his guide. Some bargaining i

MODERN THEORIES.

When Children Ask

“Why."

Modern theories about children need to be tempéred with sound

common sense.

What a nuisance children are who keep asking the same thing! "Ask, no questions and you'll be told no lies," said our nurses once. To-day we realise that the child who asks no questions is likely to learn few facts. The modern mother feels guilty of neglect if she does not answer every ques- tion her child may put. The de- sire for knowledge, runs the theory, must not be stifled, how. ever wearisome the eternal Why and What.
