MR. SHELDON REPLIES TO CASE OF RESPONDENTS.

MANY CHILDREN DEAD. Judge (Sir Peter Grainer its

While the full toll of the earthquake which caused wide- spread devastation in Southern Italy has yet to be compiled, the full horror of the ghastly visitation can now be deter- mined following details of the destruction in the outlying districts. It is now shown that one of the most productive regions in the country was turned into a frightful shambles of desolation and horror. Few houses were left standing in some districts where there was a death in practically every family.

The casualty list so far shows nearly two thousand dead and over four thousand injured. Children constitute a large proportion of those who met their deaths in the disaster. Main roads have been torn up and communications shattered, thus rendering relief work difficult. Acroplanes are being used to drop food to the stricken districts while motor lorries are taking out supplies and bringing back the dead and injured. Naples, in addition to the earthquake shocks, has been visited by a hurricane of alarming intensity. To add to the terror of the populace the Fozzuolo volcano is erupting and Vesuvius is glowing threateningly. The results of the disaster are vividly described in the messages given below.
