THE EFFECT OF EXCHANGE.

THE INCREASING COST OF FOOD,

In view of the advertisement, which appears in our to-day's issue, we have interviewed the Dairy Farm Ice and Cold Storage Co., Ltd., and are informed that they have been reluctantly compelled to In- crosse their retail prices as from Ist July to cover the difference in exchange. This step has been taken after giving to their custo- mers the full benefit of their stocks imported when exchange was more favourable. We are also informed that even the prices of local meats have had to be increased, owing to the rise in price locally, which we understand is due to new export duty imposed on live cattle ex- ported from China.

Price of Milk.

The price of dairy produce, such as fresh milk, has been advanced by 1 cont per bottle for the same reason, viz., exchange, an not only cattle but practically everything Ced in connexion with the produc tion &nd handling of milk

This film is a part talkle, and it is noteworthy for the fine act ing of the two main characters. Indeed, we have never seen this pair to better effect, Janet Gaynor being particularly effective. The photography also is a tribute to the producer, some of the impres- sionistic effects being decidedly artistic. We can recommend the film as being well worth seeing.

"The City Gone Wild."

One of the most baffling social phenomena in the United States the high murder rate-gives its 193 gruesome but fascinating aspect 78 to Thomas Meighan's new Para- 38 mount starring picture "The City 40 Gone Wild" which will be shown 77 at the Majestic Theatre Kowloon,

to-day.

Civic; atate and national officials ung. have combined with reformers, 59 psychologists and criminologists 25 in attempts to analyze the problem 34 and to lessen the number of deaths 17 caused by violence. Police of the 36 large cities of America have laboured constantly to control the forces that they believe respon- sible for murders. Prohibition, in the last few years, has been 156 another factor to be taken into account when considering the problem.

This problem of lowering the murder rate was the thought behind the "City Gone Wild," a powerful underworld story. As directed by James Cruze the pleture shows rival gangs of a large city engaged in a bitter, lethal feud. Meighan portrays a powerful criminal lawyer who brings a temporary truce between the gangs only to find their activi- ty has plunged him into a tragic situation in regard to his love for a beautiful society girl. He dis- covers that her father is the resil leader of the underworld, and when he later becomes à district attorney, he is faced with the alternative of betraying his trust to the state or disclosing his sweetheart's father's machina- tions,

A strong cast surrounds Meighan in this amazingly vivid production. The society girl is played by Marietta Milner, Viennese beauty, who was his leading woman in "We're all Gamblers."

The rival gangsters are played by Fred Kohler and Duke Mártin, whilst their respective underworld girls are Louise Brooks and Nancy Phillips.

Mr. E. Christensen, of Christen- sen & Co., reports to the police the theft of three blank cheques drawn on the Equitable Eastern Banking Corporation, numbers 85782, 89907- and 39908. They are said to have been taken from an open- safe some time between Tuesday and yesterday.
