CONTRAVENTION. OF LIQUOR

ORDINANCES.

After several hearings, the charges against four Chinese of having contravened provisions of the Liquor Ordinance were dealt with in the Central Magistracy on Saturday morning by Mr Grantham.

Wan Yip, licensee of the Po Fung wine and spirit shop, 133 Belcher Street, was fined $1,500 or six months' imprisonment for dealings in dutiable spirits, but Chan Man-chak (accountant), Kam Wan-yu (assistant) and Lam Wing, proprietor of the Tin Wo distillery were discharged.

When Mr. M. K. Lo, who appear- ed for the defendants from the wine shop, rose to address the Court at the conclusion of his case, Mr. Grantham intimated that counsel was not entitled to address him again on facts but must confine themselves, to points of law.

"While accepting your ruling." Mr. Lo replied, "I respectfully disagree with it." He submitted that there was no case against his clients, and a similar contention was held by Mr. F. X. d'Almada in respect of Lam Wing.

"The books are very strong ovidence of fraud," commented Mr. Grantham,

ATTEMPT TO STOP BURMA TROUBLE.

LABOUR ON A FIFTY. FIFTY BASIS.

Rangoon, June 1. The report of the Conciliation Board established by the Govern- ment to thrash out details for a settlement of the dispute between Burmese and Andhra dock work ers, which led to the recent fatal rioting, states that it has been arranged for stevedores to employ Burmese and Ardhra labour on a fifty-fifty basis.

Work in the harbour had been partially resumed this morning, but the majority of Andhras are still holding out.

The Burma Indian Chamber of Commerce has passed a resolution alleging that the police allowed armed Burmans to attack unaru- ed Indians, and disagreeing with the principle laid down by the Government of compulsory en- forcement of any particular labour on employers, also demanding the immediate compensation of in- nocent sufferers in the riots, while asking Indians not to send further labour to Burma.. A unique event took place at the Kowloon Docka on Saturday Idorn- ing when two new terry vessels were launched within half an hour of each other, by the Hongkong and Whampoa Dæk Company Limited, at Hunghom, for the Hongkong and Yaumati Ferry Company Limited.

The vessels were launched quiet- ly and without any ceremony, in the presence of the Directors of the Ferry Company and officials of the Dock Company, and it is believed this is the first time that such an event has taken place in Hongkong.

The particulars of the vessels are as follows:-Length 116 feet, beam 28 feet and a" speed of 10 knots. They are fitted with electric light- ing, balcawatt balanced windows, and the upper decks are covered in with a wooden awning.
