Lord Thomson's memorandum, accompanying the air estimates, says that the trials of the airships R100 and R101 were satisfactory but unexpected difficulties deve- loping in the heavy oil engine has necessitated the equipping of the R100 with petrol engines. She is therefore unsuitable for navi gation in the tropics.

The R101 is equipped with the first heavy oil engine ever used as power unit in British aircraft, but, owing to difficulties of weight. etc., it was decided in accordance with the safety-first iicy that an additional bay should be inserted in the R101 before her flight to India and back was undertaken.
