Now that all the political parties are organising for the coming elec tions the Republican issue must be MUSICAL MATINEE GIVEN BY faced. As a strong factor it is

likely to influence the polls.

MADAME CAROLA.

A special children's matinee was given at the St. Andrew's Church Hall, Kowloon, on Saturday after. noon, by Madame Anna Carola and Mrs. Helen K, Dinnen, who were assisted by Mr. G. E. Longyear, as accompanist.

Madame Carola is a soprano singer of great ability, and gave charming renderings of several wellknown and popular pieces by modern composers. She kept the children greatly amused with some fairy stories which she told..

The piano solos by Mrs., Dinner were skilfully executed and. although the children were not as appreciative of the pieces as of the funny stories told by Madame Carola, Mrs. Dinnen's contribu- tions were well received and the player was enthusiastically ap plauded after each item.

Mr. Longyear assisted by accom panying the singing,

There is much speculation in this connexion in regard to the attitude of Senor Sanchez Guerra, the Conservative ex-Premier, who was imprisoned under the dictatorship. He is still a Monarchist, but his allegianco to King Alfonso doubted. He is delivering a speech toilay, Reuter. “

Must Watch Its Step.

Tokyo, Feb. 23.

The Government's overwhelming victory is generally attributed to the unpopularity of the former Seiyukai administration, rather than to its own popularity. At the same time, it is admitted that its success in the economic field since it came Into power last- July has given the people con- fidence in the Ministry's ability and sincerity.
