CHAMPAGNE WELCOME TO MRS. MEYRICK. Crowds at the prison gate, and champagne breakfast were features of the welcome home of Mrs. Kate Meyrick, the "Night Club Queen," when she left Hollo- way Gaol, where she had spent 12 months in connexion with the Goddard case.

Another report states:-Nothing of any importance in the way of new business has transpired since the last report, and there is no evidence of

BUDGET FRAMER'S
DIFFICULTIES.
London, Feb. 23. Glcomingly analysing, two yours ago, the country's rising expendi ture, a Conservative Minister ex- pressed the opinion that the budget for 1929 might be wangled but ne would not like to stand in the shoes of the budget framer in 1920, for revenue had lost its clusticity.
Mr. Snowden, speaking at Hud- dersfield yesterday, described the last budget as fraudulent, adding that when he arrived at the Trea- sary he found the till eashless but full of unpaid bills. There might be a deficiency in his budget and it would take three years to restore natial Snances to the condition in which he left them in 1924.
With a commitment of £21,000, 000 for the Widows' Pensions and Unemployment Insurance Acts, and with a decrease in revenue of £22,- 000,000 compared with February, 1929, and an increase in expendi- ture of nearly £17,000,000, Mr. Snowden must be furiously think jug.
There is not much consolation forthcoming in the fact that there is usually a spurt in revenue during the closing weeks of the fiscal year (especially the payment of income tax), for excise stamps and receipts from other miscellaneous sources are far below budget estimates.
The position confirms the belief that Mr. Snowden will be unable to sacrifice the few millions derived from the safe-guarding duties.

"I still have the Forty-Three Club, she said. "It has been carried on in my absence by mem- bers of my family. My doctors have advised me to go abroad on account of my health, but I can not leave London: It is to fascinating."
