JAIL SENTENCE FOR CEMENT COMPANY RICKSHAMEN RIOT NEW BROOM

MR. BREWER.

A LENGTHY STATEMENT FROM THE DOCK.

FOUR MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT WITHOUT HARD LABOUR. -

PRISONER'S AMBITIONS.

Mr. Noel Instone Brewer, barrister-at-law and former President of the Instone Banking Corporation, was sentenced to four months' imprisonment without hard labour-tantamount to four months in the second division-when he appeared before Mr. Justice Wood this morning for judgment in respect of a charge of making a false statement in the Statutory Report submitted to the Registrar regarding the Bank's affairs. He was found guilty by a jury ten days ago, sentence being deferred..

Mr. Brewer made a lengthy statement from the dock in. mitigation of punishment, his address being heard, amongst others, by Mrs. Brewer, who was in Court.

The burden of the statement was that no fraud was intended, that he had not gained anything by it, and did not hope to gain by it. He acted bona fide according to his understanding of the law.

Mr. Justice Wood, imposing sentence, pointed out that the charge was a grave one. He was of the opinion that it had been accused's ambition to appear as Director of a Corporation which had gigantic financial stability, while he knew that the Instone Bank was nothing of the kind,

Mr. Brewer was visibly moved when sentence of Imprison, ment was passed, but he made no comment.

"BUILDING FOR PERMANENCE.”

Addressing the Court from the dock, Mr. Brewer said: My Lord, I have been found guilty
