STEAMER ON FIRE.

OUTBREAK IN CARGO OF

COAL ON CALULU,

A good deal of excitement was created among shipping circles in the barbour yesterday morning when it wan noticed that the Austral-China Navigation Company's na. Calulu was on fire at No. A 3 buoy. Smoke was bolching from the No. 5 hold, and the No. 1 fire float, in charge of Mr. G. C. Muss, the Central Station Officer, was alongside attempting to subduo the conflagration, which the firemen eventually succeeded in doing after an: hour and a half's work.

The outbreak was first discovered at 6.30 a.m. in the No. 5 hold aft which contained about 500 tons of coal. The master of the vessel Captain Thomas P. Blair, wan" im- mediately, notified, and he had all the officers and crew roused in an effort to check the blaze. There are 13 Europeans and 58 Asiatics on board. and all set to work with a will.

No. 7 Police launch, which was

cruising the harbour, was communi-

cated with and sent on a,moxnago_to the Central Fire Station for the fre Boat The No. 1 boat, with Mr. Moss directing operations, was soon on the scene. Thick clouds of smoke wero coming out of the hold and it was difficult at first, owing to the impos. sibility of entering the hold, to get to the sent of trouble. However. with the assistance of the officers who directed attention to the spot at which the outbreak occurred, Mr. Moas soun

got his men fighting the burning coat. Water was pumped in by means of six homes, and after an hour and a half's work the officer was satisfied that

the outbreak had been quelled. By this timo there was about eight fect of water in the hold, and this subse- quently, when all danger was over, was pumped out.

Mr. H. T. Brooks, the Superintend- ent, and another fire float also appear 'ed on the neene' and completed, Che, good work done by No. 1.

Fortunately the ship was not dam- aged, but about 100 tons of coal were destroyed. The fire is believed to have been caused by spontaneous com- bustion.

The Calulu" arrived in Hongkong an Monday from Australia via Manila and hind 165 tons of general cargo on board for local discharge. She is un old German boat, built in 1907, of 4.390 gross and 2,874 net Lunnage, and is registered at Hongkong. She is 390.3 ft. in length, 25.2 ft. in depth. with 51 ft. boum,
