CONVICTED OF THEFT OF JEWELLERY.

ROBBERY IN HOTEL.

Describing himself n a student of the Whampoa Academy, holding a commissioned rank and latterly engaged as private secretary to a former Magistrate of the Po 'On District, as well as secretary to the Superintendent of the Canton Police, a Chinese appeared before Mr. W. Schoßeld at the Kowloon Magistracy this morning on charge of the theft of a quantity of jewellery worth $210, the pra- perty of a resident of the Kam Toi Hotel in Nathan Road.

The first defendant, who appear- od together with another mas, admitted the theft and stated that the second defendant had nothing "whatever to do with it.

The second defendant, denied the theft and, on the prosecution aceeplinit his plen, he was discharged.

room at the Kum Toi Hotel, while the "- defendant, together with the man discharged, 'occupied the adjoining room. Early yesterday morning, the com- plainant had ouzsion to leave his room; and, on returning some time afterwards, he saw the shadow of a man inside.

On entering the roon, he saw the defendant behind the door. He then missed, his jewellery, which he had left on the table under a handkerchief. The defendant was handed over to the Hotel nuthorities and then taken to the Police Station..
