INTERESTING LECTURE AT· HELENA MAY.

Re-

An interesting lecture on Ugton and Education, was given to a large audience at the Helena May Institute last evening by Professor L. Forster.

In introducing the speaker the Very Rev, the Doan, said that re- ligion played a most important part in education and reminded the audience that it had played a purt In all their lives.

Professor Forster in his address pointed out that a new situation in education had been created by the war. Nowadays we could not have a system of education dealing only with the national standpoint, In other, words we could not afford the luxury of hate.

Were

Religious education had always been a factor in the English make- up. The English people Jogically minded. It was for this reason" that after a sojourn-abroad" they did not settle down in one of the modern garden settlements, Peaceville and the like, but went back to the simple English village, with its old world beauty that stood for England.

So it was with education, and to- day we were looking back on our system to see where we had kono astray.

Professor Forster then traced the effect of Christianity on education throughout the ages. He said that- soon after the arrival in England of St. Augustine, a school was com- menced. A school was founded in Canterbury, which later became Kingston which stands to this day. By the year 604 many other schools had sprung up and, in the eighth century education was further ad- vanced by the efforts of the Church. All of these schools were the out- come of religious effort.

WALKING LECTURES TO COMMENCE.

Professor Forster traced the history of the Church's connexion with education right up to recent years, pointing out that up to 1870 education was almost entirely in the hands of religious institutions. In that year, the National Society, religious body, formerly known

Schooling in

Colony.

The lecturer "spoke of the great work carried on by religious schools In the Colony, and said that it was that they always a grave pity seemed to suffer from lack of funds. They who sit on committees, he said, were often at their wits end to devise means to make ends meet. Here in the Colony, we had the finest golf course in the Far East, and he believed that soon we were to bave the best racecourse stand outside of England. He sincerely hoped that we were not going to have poor schools side by side with these. There were three or four thousand childrer in-the Colony, said Professor Forster, who would "not receive the education they are receiving were it not for the efforts of local teachers,

Professor Forster then spoke of his experieneca in, Chinese cities which he had visited to see the work of education over the border. Going up the river to one city, he said that he had seen two fine buildings which were both used for scholastic purposes almost gutted. If only one building had been burned he would have understood

It would be most undignified for a minister to teach religion in secret. He did not know what he could 'do.'

The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to Professor Forster, to whom the Dean expressed his gratitude for the address, and to Mrs, Black who had supervised ar- rangements for tea for the many visitors.
