Whyto Smith at the Kowloon Magistracy yesterday afternoon with instructing a small girl to carry a quantity of opium.
The girl, a child of 12 years of age, was to have appeared before his Worship on a charge of posses Gion of the opium, which was valued at $2.40, but she failed to answer the charge and her ball of $60 was estreated, his Worship remarking that she was rather foolish as she would have only been fined $21.
Sub Inspector, Hoare intimated that there were possibly other reasons for her absence
His Worship.asked if the pro- secution wore counting on the girl's evidence against the man.
Sub-Inspector Hoare replied in
The naval commander received instructions to organise the expod tion following the receipt of numer eus complaints from mercantile, shipping interests. The four gun- boats arrived quietly at Sha Wan in the early morning of Monday, and the marines on the Kong Tai were among the first to get ashore. It was a dark morning, and the pirates were not aware that the ex-the affirmative. pedition were approaching. The inarines, with the assistance of armed village guards, formed a cordon around the village. The concerted assault on the pirates and suspects in the village commenced at six o'clock, and over a hundred men were taken into custody.
When the case against the man, who was represented by Mr. J. M. Remedios, was mentioned; Sub In- spector Hoare said that under the circumstances he would ask per- mission to withdraw, as the girl's evidence was the only testimony against the defendant. A Chinese In the afternoon the village detective had received informa- elders and the guards carried out ation and stopped the girl, whom he careful interrogation of all the prisoners. It was found that about twenty of them were dangerous criminals who took part on previous occasions in piracies. The remain- der were subsequently set free.
The Kong Tai left Sha Wan the following day, while the other gunboats are remaining behind to round up more suspects in the vicinity..
The arrested pirates confessed that not long ago they seized the ..s.. Cheung Lee, a passenger vessel on the run between Canton and other Kwangtung districts, and after looting the vessel the pirates sank her. The expedition to Sha Wan was partly due to the desire of the Navy to trace 'the s.s. Cheung Lee pirates.
