SECOND TRIAL FLIGHT TO BE

WEATHERED A STORM.
London, Oct. 17. The second trial flight of the new British airship, R101, will be made to-morrow as the weather condi- tions are promising to be favour

is to be erected on the old Hong- kong Hotel site.
Workmen recently unearthed the remains of what appeared to be a stone wall, which presented a seri- ous obstacle to normal progress. Enquiries were made, and it is now ascertained that the wall forms part of the original Pedder's Pier, at one time the most important
wharf in Hongkong. - » -
Long Buried.
The stones are very old and covered with barnacles, although they have been underground since 1899 or 1900, when the great re- clamation scheme was in the course of development, and the Hongkong waterfront was being extended to what is now the Praya. They were uncovered at a depth of about four- teen feet, while some little distance away the remains of an old Iron alipway were unearthed at about the same level..
It has been suggested that the stones may have formed the wall of the old Glenealy Nullah, which ran close to the wharf. This theory has been rejected by old residents. however, in favour of the pier theory.
Named After Officer.
Old Pedder Pier (or wharf) was named after a naval officer who rendered great service to the Colony in the days of its infancy. It was constructed largely of stone, and was the starting point for Steam launch plenic parties, sum- pans, etc.. just as the waterfront piers are to-day. In 1897 the Pier was partially demolished in the course of the reclamation, and when the latter was completed, what is now known as Blake Pier was built.
For some years it was also known as Pedder's Pier, but eventually it was re-pumed."
Strong Feeling.
The airship will leave her moor-i ing mast at 8 o'clock in the morning and fly westward from Cardington, making a tour over the large indus
again sometime before sundet.
Lord Thomson, the Air Minister, will be one of the passengers. He will be accompanied by his private secretary and proposes to carry out a normal day's work while in flight just as he would if he were in his office.
Major Scott, who is in command of the R101, is greatly pleased with the way the airship yesterday weathered storm conditions while at her mooring mast
