RECENT ROBBERY."

ARRESTS IN NATHAN ROAD AFFAIR.

The preliminary trial of two nun on charges arising out of an armed robbery committed at No. 681, Nathan Road, on September¡ 3. last, was commenced before Mr. T. S. Whyte Smith at the Kowloon Magistracy yesterday afternoon.

Sub-Inspector James conducted the case on behalf of the Police and in describing the facts, said that the evidence was to the effect that the two defendants appeared at the door of No 681, Nathan Road, second floor, at about 10 a.m. on September 3. One of them was carrying a parcel while the other had a letter addressed to the occupier of the flat.

In the ensuing discussion, Mr.' Chiu Chao-fan pointed out "the numerous advantages which this Colony previously enjoyed as a shipping centre and entrepot, but with the comparatively recent development of new shipping and commercial routes, and the 1925 strike and boycott, firma in the producing centres have taken to sumers. other advantages

A certain amount of noise was made while one of the victims shouted out "save life." The cries were not heard in the street but an amah who was on the roof, heard the shouta and going into No. 691 she gave the alarm.

Police whistles were blown and officers at the Mongkok Police Station which is near the scene of the robbery, went towards the house and arrested the two defen- dants as they ascended the stairs. They were taken back to the floor and when searched the atolen pro- perty was found on their persons. During an examination of the floor two daggers were found and it would be given in evidence that one of the defendants was seen in possession of a dagger.

It was not quite sure whether there were others concerned in the robbery or whether in the ex- eltement the" inmates imagined that there were more than two It was very likely that there were only two but one witness would say that two other men made their escape by going on to the roof.

Evidence of the production of plans of the house was given by Mr. C. A. Grimes after which the outline given by Sub Inspector James was borne cut by wit-

nesses.

The case was adjourned.

MURDER OF BISHOP.

WORK OF A FANATICAL SOCIETY.

Hankow, Sept. 19. A letter has just been received by the Franciscan Mission reveal- ing that the murders of Bishop Jans and his co-workers, Fathers Bruno, and Rupertus, were per- petrated by Spirit Soldiers, mem- bers of a fanatical society similar to the Red Spears of Honan. There are no further details re- garding the crime-Reuter.

At this juncture the speaker gave a few examples of the unsatisfactory state of affairs among some Chinese busi ness men here.

Mr. Chiu concluded by saying that the currency system in Hong- kong, the unsatisfactory state of which had just been dealt with fully by Mr. Ho Kwong, was un- doubtedly another factor hinder- ing the rapid development of trade in this part of China,

New Chinese Tariffs. Reference was made to the newly inaugurated tariff schedule of the Chinese Government, when Mr. Ng U-cham rose and told the meeting that this new tariff rate had placed Hongkong in a most embarrassing position, when ex- Porters in North Chiis found that goods from their producing centres it was to their advantage to send to Canton for distributions to the interior parts of the Two Kwangs, for the simple reason that by so doing they would save the payment of additional taxation and trans- portation expenses. The result of this is that firms in Nam Pak Hong, who did an enormous busi- ness with North China before, now find that they will have to open branches in Canton or else will have to suffer by suspending con nexions with exporters in the North...

Mr. Ng admitted that one of the remedies for the depression in Hongkong would be to revise the existing currency problem here,

Mr. Ho Kwong said he proposed to call a meeting of members of the 24 Trade Guild with the view to petition the Government to take action to remedy the currency
