CATTERALL'S ILL LUCK.
· London, June 18. As generally expected after the South Africans had spent so long over "scoring 260 runs in their Arst innings, the First Test match at Edgbaston, Birmingham, closed to-day in a draw.
England showed their batting prowess in their second innings, trouncing the South African bowlers to the tune of 308 runs: før 4 wickets in very short time comparatively.
The tourists were set the task: of scoring 304 runs to win. When atumps were drawn they had scor ed 171 for the loss of one wicket.
Catterall's. Misfortune.
R. I. Catterall, who has three Test centuries against England to his credit, was unfortunate to miss an addition to this number, being caught by White off Fender on the stroke of time. He had geored B8 in excellent style.
Mitchell, the top scorer la the first innings, again batted with great restraint. He was not out at the close of play and had an aggregate for his first Test match of 149 for once out.
Bright English Batting.
The bright cricket of the day by however, provided wak, Sutcliffe and Hammond. Killek was sent back without fadding to his overnight acore .of 23, Sutcliffe and Hammond proceeded to collar the bowling, and between the start and lunch-time they put on in partnership no fewer than 185, of which Sutcliffe made, 90 (bringing his score to 100) and Hammond 90. This was brilliant- ly fast scoring, but soon after re- sumption, Sutcliffe's balls were erttered by Merkel. He had made 114. Hammond went on to complete his hundred, soon after which Fender and Duleepsuitji Both fell victim to. Ochse. VAD Hammond had made 138 (not out) and Hendren 8 mol out) 3. C. White applied the when closure to the Inninga.
On the Defensive.
Dad South Africa attacked the towling with vigour, there was a bare chance of victory, but Though Catterall scored with reasonable facility, his partner more or lesa sut on the splice.
When the ten interval was reach- ed the partnership was unbroken, the score-board showing 103 for 0 wicket. R. II. Catterall had at this stage nude 61 and B. Mit- chell's contribution was 35.
