· London, June 18. As generally expected after the South Africans had spent so long over "scoring 260 runs in their Arst innings, the First Test match at Edgbaston, Birmingham, closed to-day in a draw.
England showed their batting prowess in their second innings, trouncing the South African bowlers to the tune of 308 runs: før 4 wickets in very short time comparatively.
The tourists were set the task: of scoring 304 runs to win. When atumps were drawn they had scor ed 171 for the loss of one wicket.
Catterall's. Misfortune.
R. I. Catterall, who has three Test centuries against England to his credit, was unfortunate to miss an addition to this number, being caught by White off Fender on the stroke of time. He had geored B8 in excellent style.
Mitchell, the top scorer la the first innings, again batted with great restraint. He was not out at the close of play and had an aggregate for his first Test match of 149 for once out.
Bright English Batting.
