NÓ AUTHORITY TO CASI! CHEQUES.

The case in which Corpura! Charles Hendry, of the 2nil K.O.S.B., is charged before a Dis- trict Court Martial with the, embezzlement of sums amounting to $1,300, was continued yesterday. At the afternoon, altting of the Court Mr. Gerald Young, manager of the Central Store of the N.A.A, F.L., was called as a witness for the prosecution, and during his examination he stated that he had occupied that position for 15 months. There were entries in the books of the N.A.A.FI. which showed that cheques had been cashed by him. As a matter of considerable fact he cashed number of cheques for army de- partments.

THE DUKE'S VISIT.

LORD AIRLIE BENDS A JAPANESE SWORD.

Tokyo, May 6. Brilliant weather attended the Duke of Gloucester's visit to the unvalry school at Narashino, where he spent an interesting day gaining rat-hand impressions of Japanese military efficiency.

The programme included an ex- hibition of horsemanship, fencing and bayonet fighting; lunch with the War Minister; and then cavalry encounter in which both mounted and dismounted cayairy, artillery, armoured cars and air- craft participated, the climax be ing a spectacular cavalry charge across the open moors to the de- companiment of machine-gun fire, booming guns and bombing by aircraft.

You would have the signature of the P... and want to know why the eheque was not met?--Yes. | That is one reason.

A very good reason indeed. Very good!'

Lord Airlie, knowing how highly the Japanese prize their swords, was most apologetle, but tho owner, amidst much laughter, put him at his ease by promlaing to present it to him as a souvenir.

Except for short stretches in the rural district, crowds two to three deep lined almost the whole route of twenty-five miles on both sides, both going and returning. Parties of school-children waved British and Japanese paper flags. Even the plcturesque old thatched farma in the hamlets, and the village shrines, were beflagged.

An interesting contrast was the townsmen's and the peasantry's were equally welcome. Both sincere, but the former shouted vociferously, while "Banzni" the latter stood and bowed in respectful silence, In accordance with the custom of old Japan.
