Loss of Oil from Axle Housing.
Question: The rear axle hous- ing of my car is supposed to need refilling one in 3,000 miles, but by removing the oil plug, I And that the supply is nearly jèxhausted after 700-800 miles of driving. Where does it go to? I find a little gear oil on the garage floor, but not enough, it seems to account for such'a loss as this.
Answer: No doubt most of the loas occurs when the axle is in action and very little while it is at rest. Probably the escape takes place along the shafts and out at tho wheels to the inside of the brake drums, past the felt washer that is located in ench end of the axle-housing, just inside the outer shaft bearing. If, upon removing the rear wheels, you find oil in their brake drums, this theory is probably correct and putting in new folb washers should stop the escape. Another possibility is that the oil is lost through the neck of the housing, past the {pinion-shaft bearings and the coll retaining washers at this point. These can be tightened, if you find ovidence of oil loss therd,
TYRE. INFLATION.
Points to Remember.
"Tyre mileage Hfo and service depend on several factors," accord- ing to Mr. M. B. King, of the Dragon Motor Car Co., Ltd, the Firestone agents in Hongkong.
"These factors include the tyre, driver, car, roads, and last but not Icast, on using tyres large enough for the heaviest load placed on them at any time and keeping them inflated to the correct pressure.
"Nearly every day some one will say to us, Why do some people get 25,000 miles from their tyras when the beat I over got is around 10,000 miles? How do you accounti for that?"
The trouble is not with the tyres, but with the way they are overloaded or underinflated. No- thingman, beast or mechanical | device ----can stand up under groat abuse. The remedy is to provide tyres large enough for the maxi- mum load that may be placed on them and to keep them properly inflated.
"Reasonable care and regular in- spection of tyres for minor In- juries and chocking of air pressure will enable the motorist to get the most in miléage and useful ser-
