One, story was that, the gatekeeper again obstinately refused to admit the French athletes who again with- drew to consider whether they would participate in the games at all. It transpired later, however, that no second incident occurred. After the first incident the French team was promised that the offend- ing gatekeeper would be dismiss ed. When the team arrived and found him still on duty.they spon- taneously decided not to par- ticipate in the march past and lodged an official protest describ ing the incident as a gross insult. Meanwhile the French authorities consulted with the French Minis- ter to the Netherlands before de- elding whether they would parti- cipate in the games.

Subsequently the matter settled. The French team decided to take part and took the Olymple oath along with the other teams in the stadium in the afternoon..-- Reuter.

A GREAT FIRE.

SIX-STOREY WHARF AND CONTENTS DESTROYED.

London, July 28, Overheated peanuts are. belleved to have been the cause of the grealest river fire for years, at the century-old, six-storey wharf occupied by Messrs. Chambers on the waterway of the Thames. It is in the danger-zone of the Tooley-street Dosk area, and was stocked with grain, peanuts, and dessiented coconut.

The fire started yesterday even- ing, the flames leaping 100 feet. Two hundred fremen from var ous parts of London battled all night long and thousands of sightseers thronged the London Bridge and Tower Bridge on both sides of the river..
