To Paradise,
"As I was hastily getting out of my oom I saw my grandmother in the act of plous genuflexion. As at this time of the day such exhibi- tions of piety were unusun with her, asked her what the matter was. I should like to tell the reader that my grandmother is 75 years old and has been living all the time in the magic, perhaps epic is the word, age of India's past. She told me in sublimated accents that four heavenly cars were desending on the earth to bear bodily to Paradise the good and plous people of the place There was ng hint of any surprise in her words. It was all as it should be. Those cars had come before, to convey the right sort of | people to that place.
"My envy of her was 'inexpres. sible, 1, however, managed to look up and saw the four boats flying in the direction of the south. Later on in the evening when I went out for a turn, I noticed a cer- tain twinkle of spiritual upliftment In every face I happened to see. Everyone in Trivandrum is, indeed, nearer to heaven to-day than they over were. I also heard knots of whispers here and there about the visible glory of the British Em- pire."

Italy and Skeily, which used to be the worst places in the world for professional beggars, have ex- perienced a miraculous change, since Mussolini abolished their oc eupation, by scribbling his sign- ture to an edict, abolished the greasy mendicant- organ-grinder abroad who, too, so notably impaired Italy's dignity in foreign estimation.

Mexico is now following Italy's example and proscribing profes wional beggars. They proved such a pest in Mexico City last month, at Christmastime, that President Calles gave outspoken orders to them. A the police to abolish large number of arrests wero made, and orders were sont to all provincial authorities to put an end to the constant pestering of passers-by.
Czecho-Slovakia, too, has been dealing with the nuisance. Pra- gue introduced last winter an in- teresting system whereby tho charitably inclined bought metal dines from the city authorities and gave a diac instead of a coin to the mendicant, who then took this diac to a group of courteous and sympathetic (though not soft- hearted) social workers, called the Welfare Committee, who gave food, clothing, advice, and work The interesting discovery WAS made, however, that far more dises were given to persons ac- costing the passer-by for alma than were ever brought to the Committee, clear proof that most of the tales of woo were bogua. The Czecho-Slovak Government, was reported last summer to be drafting very comprehensive and 'drastic measures for the control of roving gypsies and vagrants, including the taking of finger. prints, the provision of identity books, and the registration of fire- arms. I have not heard, however, that the Bill conferring these powers on the authorities has yet been passed.
Lands for the Tramp. Morocco and Russia are almost the only countries in this part of the world where the tramp is still a quite respected and self-respect- ing member of society. So sim- iple is the standard of living in Morocco that It is very, dificult to explain to a native the differ- ence between being a tramp and going for a walking tour. The tramp needs only coffee and the simplest food, and this, he can always, obtain from his hosta in the next village by gifts of wild fruit picked as he goes along. In Siberia and Russia the tramp entera a shop, and walks up to the counter. The nearest assist- ant glances, at him and hands him a farthing. He goes. No word is spoken. The inevitable routine of the transaction is taken for granted.
Berlin, Feb. 5.-After. an all- night vigil in the Bavarian woods, Johann Hein, the bandit, has been captured.. A human ring had had been drawn around him, and gradually tightened throughout. Thursday night. Cold, hungry, disheartened, the highwayman managed to slip carly yesterday through the ranks of his pursuers. At the nearest village, however, he was challenged by the gen-. darme, and, after slight resistance, was captured and disarmed of his last pistol and fifty-six cartridges. A farm labourer held up in Thuringia by a village policeman' who mistook him for Hein, ignored this call to stop, and was shot .down.
