at Roehampton beating Lieutenant- Commander P.F. Glover in the final in three straight sets with, the loss of only seven games.

Worthington is a player, who, to use the Gilbertian phrase, does nothing in particular and does it very well. No one would dream of trying to imitate his style, but his shots are undeniably effective, mainly by reason of their almost 1 unfailing accuracy.

Yet he is not by any means a stone waller, and he has several scoring strokes, the 1 best of them being a hooked drive from the forehand side across the court, which has lots of pace on o It.

Diving, like any other sport

in any field, has its fundamen- tals.

Confidence, form, rhythm and timing are the most essential points for a beginner to keep in mind. Have confidence along wtih a little nerve on the end of a diving board, two to three feet from the water, and you should be able to try driving,

Stand erect, with toes over the end of the board, and feet together, and arms stretch- cd over the head'; bend body at the waist line and bring the outstretched arms parallel with the thighs.

With the head well bent for- ward and chin against the chest, prazeed to a falling motion. Try to keep the feet on the board as long as possible.

Do this quite a few times, and after gaining confidence and overcoming fear, you are ready to take the same dive with a spring from a standing position, and gradually work into a run- ning plan front dive
