Oil-mixture Lubrication. Question: In regard to the oil with the practice of mixing

asoline, when "running in" a new that the engine, it seems to me gasoline would "kill"" the oil and. render it useless! How about this?

Answer. It is true that the gasoline dissolves the oil, but it does not alter its lubricating pro- perties. As the mixture of oil and Kasoline passes the carburetor the gasoline is distilled off from the oll, the gusaline vapourizes and mixes with air to form the fuel mixture, while the oil in the form of a very fine mist, is carried into- the cylinders with the combustible charge. Some of this oil mist set- tles upon the cylinder walls and forms a lubricating film upon them. Innumerable two-cycle en- gines have no other lubrication than that furnished by the oil mist. carried in with the fuel and the fact that they are well oiled is ample proof of the effectiveness of the method.

ELECTRIC BRAKES.

New System Suggested.

Beloit, Wis., June 17-The near future may see the adoption of an electric brake system on passenger cars that will require the least energy on the part of the driver to stop the heaviest type of machine within a short dis tance.

01

Already this type of brake is being manufactured for use heavy trucks and trailers; and is being found more practicable than It is the the mechanical type. product of a Beloit firm that hus' been building truck trailers for some time..

According to L. P. Warner, an official of this firm, the apparatus requires less électricity to operate all four brakes on a heavy pas- Henger car than is needed to run one headlight or to blow, the horn

once.

"This is because the electrical energy is used merely to initiate the braking force," Warner ex- plains. "The braking force is actually applied by the forward movement of the vehicle. In other words, it is a self-energizing brake and the electricity is merely used to apply the mechanical brake which does the work.

"Other electrical brakes have been used before, but they used the entire amount of current and were not practical for commercial use,"

Several passenger panies, including General Motors, ara said to be interested in this innovation, and Warner's firm is even now making up drawings to adapt the electric brake to their
