Coroner announced that thirty- nine skeletons, or practically ske letons, were found on the shore of Kwong Chow Island, which is" between Hongkong and Cheung Chow, and that it was probable that these corpses were those of the victims of the sinking of the Leung Kwong.

News had also been received that the attempts to raise the Leung Kwong had failed and that the vessel had been definitely abandoned.

It is probable that the bodies found were cf those who were

trapped under locked grilles in the hottom, and when the ship" broke her back, when attempts were made to vaise her, the bodies were released.

The first witness called Mr. William Russell, the Govern. ment Marine Surveyor, who gave evidence at the previous hearing. Ife said that the rafts on the Loung Kwong could Carry 11. persons each, but could support many more, that is to say that the raft could float with 11 persona sitting on it, but if the people were in the water and húng on to the raft, a much bigger number could be sup ported.

Mr. Holmes: You mentioned Portsmouth and Ryde. Is it not a fact that you get a bigger sca in those two ports than you got in the Harbour here even in a- Lynhoon?

Mr. Holmes: The passage boat: is frequently delayed by heavy seas?... No, only sometimes by

fog.

Witness added that since the 1924 regulations only half the river steamers had been inspected by the Harbour Department. Of these, sixty per cent were British boats and forty per cent. foreiga. He did not consider the time taken over the inspection exceptionally long, as his staff had other work to At the Sunning Piracy Com- The witness in answer to the do. else.

"Witness in answer to further questions said that he agreed that" the waters between Hongkong and the West River Delta was "smooth water in an estuary."

"Surveyors' Work.

In answer to the Coroner wit. ness stated that there were six Government Marine Surveyors and at the present moment, two were on Homo leave and one was in Hospital. He did not consider the number adequate. One man was in charge of surveying six hundred launches in the harbour twice a year. The same man had other duties besides.

Commander Hole, on being asked whether he would like to add any thing further, went into the wit ness box and stated that he was not satisfied that the waters be- tween Hongkong and the Canton Delta should be classed as, estuary water. The waters just beyond the western, entrance were some- thing of a sea. A boat bound for Macau after passing Lantas had quite a nasty little sen from the western extremity of Macau. He said he could not agree that such waters could be classed as lake or estuary water,

The Coroner: "You still think the Board of Trade would not license ships like the Leung Kwong to ply with her equipment in these waters.

Witness: I think they would not. From the reading of the sec- tion that has been under discussion I take it to apply to ships plying say between Portsmouth and Ryde, My which is qulto landlocked. differentiation is that the water here is open to ocean swell and that estuary water is confined to local disturbances only.

After Commander Hole had given evidence Mr. Bratton said. he took" exception to that part of Mr. Russell's evidence which stated that the Master and Officers of the Leung Kwong should have Been to the locked grilles.

The Grilles.

The No. 1 Indian guard was reenlled and he stated that when he joined the ship the Captain gave him a bunch of keys and told him to lock the grilles when the ship pat to sea. He had done so on the first trip and had offered the keys to the Captain. The Cap- tain at that time told witness to keep the keys and witness had since had the keys in his custody. He had followed up his instruc- tions and locked the grilles when- over the ship put to sea.

the

He further stated that standing orders to No. 1 guard were read to him by an Indian interpreter and that he could only remember one injunction, and that was that the Captain was to be The standing strictly obeyed. orders did not contain anything regarding the grilles,

Mr. Brutton: if the Captain sald he never had the keys, he would be lying?-Yes."

Witness further added that he never received any instructions from the Sergeant of the Guards about the grilles.

Mr. Brutton intimated that he would like to recall the Captain.

The enquiry Was adjourned until 2.30 p.m. to-morrow.

The Coroner intimated that it would definitely finish then. He. would like to sum up and give the jury two or three days to delibe- rate over his directions.
