THE SOUTHERN
RETREAT.
The exodus of foreigners from the Yangtze and other zones continues, according to to-day's news of the China situation. Practically all foreigners at places above Hankow along the Yangtsze have been evacuated, and a large party of American citizens are due to arrive in Hongkong to-day from the Canton dis- trict.
The split in the Kuomintang party is causing much appre- hension in southern ports and there are fears of impending clushes between the moderates" and extremists at Swatow, Amoy and
Canton.
The Japanese at Hankow are determined to hold their Con- cession and are considerably strengthening their defences, the forces on shore having been increased, the volunteers mobilised and strong defensive barricades erected."
The Southerners have sustained further reverses and are re- ported to be gradually fulling back to south of the Yangtze, at one or two points. The Northerners are advancing from the direction of Shasi.
