MAN AND HIS CLOTHES.

WHERE THE DOG SCORES.

"Clothes" formed the subject of an address delivered ut the Gres ham College by Professor Leonard Hill The natural garment of the body, he said, was the skin and the hair. The hair did not help men much, but in the case of the lower animals It was an exceeding ly light and efficient garcient.

SATURDAY,

PEER'S RUNAWAY MARRIAGE.

A ROMANTIC STORY.

A romantic story is associated with Upton House estate, near Banbury, which, with 800 neros, was recently old by Messrs. John D. Wood and Company.

A part of the house goes back to the 15th century, but the houss itself was built at the end of the 17th century. In 1759-it-belong-

In certain parts of South Ameri ea, as Darwin had observed, no clothes were worn, and the skin was the only protection, except that a wild beast's skin was worn on the windy side of the body. Yet the climate was as inclement as ours.. The natives covered themselves with fish oil to keep the rain away, and Darwin had des- cribed witnessing a mother with her baby paddling in the wintry

would never consent to his daugh. Fearing that the rich banker

ter'a marriage to a poor peer, the Earl one day asked him, "What would you do if you fell in love with a girl whose father would not consent to her marriage?"

"Why," said the banker, "run away with her, to be sure."

Lucky Shat.

The young nobleman was not slow to adopt the auggestion. A maid's help was obtained; she drugged the duenna, who slept in an outer apartment to that of the young heiress, and Miss Child es- caped from the house in Berkeley- square at night and fled with her lover in a post-chaise and four.

The natives had found it neces- sary to keep down the excess population by infanticide. Men could live under these extraordin- ary rigorous conditions, but it was essential that the skin should not. be aoaked in water, as it thereby lost the power of keeping in heat. Hot blooded animals like whales

Objection to Soap.

The eloping pair reached Gretna Green, where they were married by the village blacksmith.

The banker never forgave them, and his immense fortune was left to the first child, Lady Fane, who married George Villiers, Earl of Jersey.

Sir Almroth Wright had been accused of objection to washing.

At the battle of Edge Hill, the but what he had really objected to centre of the Royal line was in was washing with soap, which took the rear of Upton House, at a dis- out the natural grease. Greasence of about 11⁄2 miles. kept away microbes, and if it was continually washed away it need- ed to be replaced. If the con- ductivity of stationary air to heat was one, that of the skin was twelve and of stationary water 40.

Man probably originated in tropical regions, but had goon found the comfort of clothes, using cotton, wool, cumel hair, and so forth. There was evidence that he clothed himself 5,000 years

ago.

The heat-retaining power 0. clothes did not depend on the fibres themselves, but on their power of entangling the air. It was essential that the captive air should be kept stationary. A cold piercing stream of air defeated the object of clothes by removing the stationary coating of warm air, and birds and other animals al ways faced the wind so as to avoid their fur or feathers being ruled and the warm. captive air escap- ing.

In the case of fur only two per cent. was solid matter, the rest was captive air. In the case of the ordinary overcoat 75 per cent. was air and the rest solid matter, while leather contained about 40 per cent. of air. Smooth linings to clothing reduced the permeabl lity of the fabric. Naturally clothes had to be considered from the standpoints of their wearing, of their resistance to washing. and of fashion. A colossal amount of money was spent for pure vanity without any considera- tion of keeping the body warm.

Why Wool Is Warmer. Wool, being very elastic, did not cling to the body like cotton or linen, and consequently by entang- ling the air was warmer. Further, dry, woollens on taking up moia- ture actually became warmer. Thus in absorbing perspiration from the body they took up heat. This could be demonstrated by coating a thermometer bulb with wool and moistening it. The ther- mometer showed a rise of tempera- ture.

Enormous quantities of moisture could be absorbed. Thus a sol- dier's tunic, on being exposed to mist for four hours, gained 3% ounces by means of the water in- corporated.

Clothes also, if clean, warded off the attacks of insects. They protected from over-exposure to the sun, but if white-they rob- bed us of the rays which we ought to get.

The effect of different colours could be shown by exposing strips of blackdred, green, and white. fabrics to the sun's rays while lying on snow. The black, which absorbed the sun's rays quickly, sank into the snow, the red rather less quickly, while the green and white (which reflected the sun's raya) hardly aank in at all. As regarded radiation at body tem perature this was no more marked In the case of black than in that of white coverings:
