Language School.

The noticeable falling off in the number of students in the Lan- guage School to which my pre- decessor, called attention at the.. last annual general meeting, bas I am sorry to say, continued.. There are several reasons which account for this, amongst thera the present troublous times through which we are passing and the consequent heavy demands made. by the Volunteer Services upon the time of the Junior mem- bers of your staffs, and secondly the decreased number of Juniora now coming from home. Your Committee nevertheless, cannot emphasize too strongly the neces sity of a knowledge of the lan- guage by the juniors. of to-day..

The time does not seem far off when the business, man in China to be successful must be conver sant with the language of the. people among whom he dwells, and that with the increasing national spirit of the Chinese, mer- chant, the Chinese language will doubticas be used more in busi ness and conimercial documents la the future than is the ease at present, or has been the case in the past. Tour Committee has done all in its power to bring this mattor to the attention of members during the past year, the School curriculum has been revised, the necessity of knowing the written language has been emphasized and a final alternative colloquial course has Leen adopted.

An Appeal.

I appeal to you to give the Chamber's Language School, which has been of great help to juniors in the past, your support for it is deserving of it. The falling off in the number of students, however, has been so grave, that the credit balance which for years has been carried forward, has been exhausted, and a débit balance incurred. Though the amount actually is small, from the Chamber's point of view, it ia large, and your Committee baa come to the conclusion that if the school, la to continue, it will be necessary to increase the fees. The present fees are Tls. 10 per month-from May 1 of this year: they will be increased to Tis. 15, a sum which is hardly commen. surate with the value of the instruction ~ received. Should, however, students attend in larger numbers, your Committee, I feel aure, would be prepared to recon.- mend a reduction as it did several years ago.A:
