members. The votes amounted to $20,601, of which the only one of any size was the sum of $15,458 for transport. As the Colonial Transuror had pointed culty of getting an accurate ac- out in the memorandum, the dim-
count of the cost of passages was found he had underestimated the always very considerabic and he
expenditure by that sum.
Taipo Bridge. Referring to the supplementary estimates for this year, the Chair- man and he thought members would find the explanations. had. been made as full as possible. The greater number of them were re-votes. As to the item dealing with the now bridge at Taipo, of which a very full account had been given in the explanation, the work had been delayed by alterations in the design of the bridge, and
considerable ultimate saving the hoped to the Government, re- sulting in the vote for last year lapsing altogether and having to be revoted this year. Similarly, the item for $20,000 for clothing should have been paid last year and the sum of $37,000 odd re- mained unexpended. The bill had fallen to be paid in the current year with the result that extra money had to be revoted. The last item, of $29,250 was one which had already been before the Finance Committee, had been fully explai ed to them and would, he thought; meet with the approval of overy
one.
Water Meters.
In regard to the item for water meters, the Hon. Mr. Kotewall said he noticed the explanation given was that there would be a saving of $5,000 on the Hongkong: meter vote, and it was suggested that this should be transferred from Hongkong to Kowloon, He wished to ask whether, this was due to the transfer of meters from Kowloon to the city of Victoria.
The Chairman replied in the negative.
