REIGN OF TERROR.
FEARFUL SCENES IN SHANGHAI CITY.
Shanghal, March 22. Reuter's Chinese correspondent describes the scene in Chapel as worse than hell. Blocked thoroughfares prevent victims from escaping from robbers and joutera. Nothing is heard but shots and the screams of women and children running hysterically. hither and thither, many of the women naked owing to the soldiers stripping them, "mostly however for their clothes and jewels.
They are afraid to remain in their houses for fear. of rapers. Sometimes heavily laden soldiers protect themselves with machine- guns carried by fellow, soldiers who think nothing of clearing the way down a crowded street by firing and killing scores.
Later. The sky is lit up by increasing fires in Chapel this evening.
Several efforts were made by parties of Shantung troops to break through the International Settlement defence cordon this afternoon but they were defeated. Numbers of Shantungers have been disarmed and allowed to enter the Settlement.
Others present. Included, Dr. 0. W. McKenny, Miss Sloan, Mr. P. T. Lamble, Capt. Williams, Mr. H. V. Harmon, and others.
