Several of the pirates spoke good English. The No. 1 pirate did not, apparently, speak English.

IN THE ENGINE ROOM,

ARMED GUARDS MOUNTED. The Chief Engineer told a Tele- graph reporter that an armed guard was kept in the engine room throughout the four days in which the pirates had control. Three pirates suddenly appeared at about, 0.20 a.m, on the 27th, held ep the fourth engineer who was on watch, and, aftor satisfying themselves that no arms were con- cealed, changed watches continu-- ally, escorting the officers to und from the engine-room.

Mr. W. B. Charlton was the wireless operator on duty at the time of the outbreaks. As far as can be ascertained, he was the first to know that anything was amigs. He was surprised from be- hind by an armed Chinese, and within a minute 'several pirates had entered the wireless roum. Mr. Charlton said that the instru ments were not damaged, greatly, as the pirates appeared to, be afraid of the set.

FIRST NEWS.

EARLY WIRELESS MESSAGES.

First news of the piracy was re- ceived in a wireless message from the vessel last night, addressed to the naval authorities and the local agents of the owners. This stated that the Seang Bee was taken con- trol of by pirates on Thursday Inst, and that she was later taken into Bias Bay. At the time the message was despatched, the vessel was in- chored off Low Island, Bins Bay, and help was urgently needed. The message further stated that the Captain and five of the first- class passengers were taken ashore in two ship's boats, but secording to later information the Captain

was released.

This morning, a further wireless message was received, from the steamer, this stating that the steamer was on her way to Hong- Rong and would arrive during the forenoon. A request was made that a pilot be sent out to bring the hont ia.

The case of the 8.8. Seang Bee would appear to be almost similar to that of the s.s. Hong Hwa which was pirated on her way up to Hongkong from Singapore just two years ago.
