BLIND.
Once the Idol, of the Oval crowds, Bobby Abel, the Surrey and England cricketer, now almost blind and in rather straitened cir- cumstances, was 69 last month. The little sports business in Kon nington, S.E., which he has had for 20 years has ceased to pay. 6 Bobby Abel told a Daily Mail re-
porter recently: "Since the war I have been almost blind, and I have been unable to manage my business. The personal touch has 3 gone, and now I shall have to try 4 and sell up. There used to be a continual stream of friends com- ing to see me; now they all seem to have vanished."

The game started on New Year's Day, the Club opening their secon innings late on Saturday after- noon, and when stumps were drawn they had lost three wickets for forty-one runs.
When the game was resumed yesterday, H. Owen Hughes gave a brilliant display by knocking up 165 not out. He reached the boundary on DO fewer than. twenty-two occasions. The Navy faced a deficit of 270 runs. Ther scoring proved fast and consistent throughout, with 62 not out from Sturgess, and they passed the Club's score with four wickets in hand and ten minutes to apare. The scores were:

In some cases cold figures speak more loudly than words of eulogy. Here, then, are some facts about Abel's achievements:
In each of the eight seasons from 1896 to 1902 he scored over 2,000 runs in first-class cricket.
In 1899 he scored 357 hot out against Somerset.

"TEST" CRICKET SHARE-OUT.
It is clear from the number of letters we are receiving from our renders that it has come as some- thing of a shock to the sporting public in this country to learn that one of the most, famous cricketers of the past, the Surrey professional, Robert Abel, is in great poverty and distress, So sad is his position that it calls for immediate aid from British Sportsmen, who are perhaps the most generous-hearted and mest kindly people in the world.
